Cepurnieks, Zilais kāpurs, izgaistošais kaķis un Alise! / The Hatter, Blue Caterpillar, vanishing cat and Alice!

“The Mad Hatter : Have I gone mad?

Alice Kingsley: I’m afraid so. You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.”

(“Alice In Wonderland” film quote)

(for the English version scroll down!)

Probably I have to start with the fact that this was one of those films that I was waiting for many, many months, because I am always fascinated and deeply touched by the way Tim Burton brings out his crazy ideas, positive on-screen schizophrenia and, of course, marvelous Johnny Depp, which is almost always a grand part of Tim Burton’s films and what’s the wonder – he is a wonderful actor, BUT… (I know, I know BUT’s always ruin the moment, but what can I do)…

..BUT unfortunately this time did not bring me so much enthusiasm and my expectations were a bit disappointed. With my clearest senses I went to the classical version of the film (Not the 3D version), so I capture the true interpretation of the story healthier and better. I didn’t want to be tricked by the visual effects and I must admit that at almost any moment of the film I was not so excited about it as I usually am when I watch Tim Burton’s films and cartoons. At some moments my thoughts even wondered far away from the film, although I tried to focus on the magic of the screen from all my heart. It only seems that Tim Burton has begun to reproduce himself and has placed himself under to the influence of 3D cinema development.

But thanks to my love for the director, I will also highlight the very positive features of the film.

Johnny Depp – the Mad Hatter. I cannot really understand whether it is a great depiction of charisma, or simply over the years, Depp has earned the honor of a great actor, but his interpretation of the Hatter was like nothing else, and once again proved that Depp can make believe, no matter how unrealistic would be the environment, situation and character.

Funny dialogues and wonderful costumes. Dialogues and the costumes – some of the strongest parts of the film, even though sometimes it seems a bit banal, but fits perfectly into the context, and the only wish is to grab the pen and write all the best quotes on the corners of your cinema tickets so you don’t forget them and can use on a daily bases- inspiring.

Fluffy and super cozy Cheshire cat. Well one awesome vanishing creature, which Tim Burton has managed to present just as I imagine Cheshire cat should be, while reading the original stories about Alice.

Tim Burton’s plus always has been the endless opportunity to create impossible possible and to make audience believe it with no questions asked. How successful (or unsuccessful) that was this time I do not want to emphasize anymore, but the moment of truth existed and that’s all what matters.

Obviously this film works better in 3D, because it is one of those films of our days that are meant to be stronger visually than from the storytelling point of view… Too bad, but that’s the fact!
